When construction was completed on Oakland International Airport in 1927, Charles Lindbergh himself attended the dedication ceremony. Adding to OAK’s history, Amelia Earhart’s final flight began at OAK. During WWII, the military took over the airport and civilian flights went in and out of San Francisco (SFO). After the war, the airlines slowly started coming back to OAK. In 1988, FedEx opened a cargo base and OAK is now one of the busiest air freight terminals in the US.
